Ocean Beach stretches for roughly three miles along the western edge of the city. It is one of the most hazardous beaches on the California coast — heavy surf, powerful rip currents, and sneaker waves have caused numerous drownings. Swimming here is for experienced open water swimmers only, and even then only under calm conditions.
